Optical follow-up of the neutron star-black hole mergers S200105ae and S200115j

Shreya Anand et al.

Summary: The third observing run of LIGO and Virgo revealed the first neutron star-black hole merger candidates in gravitational waves, which are predicted to synthesize r-process elements and create kilonova emission. Optical follow-up and analysis of two high-significance NSBH merger candidates detected to date were conducted, revealing localization probabilities but no viable counterparts were found. State-of-the-art kilonova models tailored to NSBH systems placed constraints on ejecta properties, with potential to rule out certain scenarios.

Shock-powered radio precursors of neutron star mergers from accelerating relativistic binary winds

Navin Sridhar et al.

Summary: Research shows that during the final stages of a compact object merger, if one of the binary components is a magnetized neutron star, it can lead to the shrinking of the binary orbit, increasing wind luminosity, and potentially producing a radio precursor. The precursor burst lasts for a short duration and its intensity depends on the source distance and magnetic field strength.

Shock-powered radio precursors of neutron star mergers from accelerating relativistic binary winds

Navin Sridhar et al.

Summary: The merging of magnetized neutron stars can increase their wind luminosity and potentially lead to observable radio emission precursors. Through simulations, synthetic radio light curves can be generated with precursor bursts lasting around 1-500 milliseconds. For systems with high inclinations, the outflow concentrated along the binary equatorial plane may make the signal more readily observable.
