A natural color reagent extracted from Leucaena leucocephala leaves containing mimosine was proposed for iron determination, showing good linear calibration and detection performance. The method was successfully applied to real blood tonic samples, with results consistent with the FAAS method.
A simple extract of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit leaf containing mimosine is proposed as a natural color reagent for the determination of iron. The extract exhibited the formation of Fe(III) with mimosine similarly to that of the commercially available mimosine. A linear calibration: A(460) = 6.8 x 10(-2) [Fe(III)] + 8.2 x 10(-2), R-2 = 0.99 was obtained for 0-10 mg.L-1, with LOD (3 sigma), LOQ (10 sigma) and %RSD being 0.2 mg.L-1, 0.7 mg.L-1 and less than 5, respectively. The proposed procedure was demonstrated for real samples of blood tonic. The results agreed with that of the FAAS method.
