The earthquake arrest zone

Chun-Yu Ke et al.

Summary: The study uses laboratory earthquake experiments to propose a crack model with gradually tapered slip near the rupture tips, introducing the concept of an earthquake arrest zone. Unlike the cohesive zone in fracture mechanics, the features of the earthquake arrest zone are primarily controlled by the initial stress distribution. Dynamic rupture simulations confirm how arrest conditions affect slip taper and static stress changes.
