Metabolic associated fatty liver disease increases coronavirus disease 2019 disease severity in nondiabetic patients

Feng Gao et al.

Summary: The study found that metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is associated with COVID-19 severity in nondiabetic patients, with the presence of MAFLD increasing the risk of severe COVID-19 by fourfold. The risk increases with the number of metabolic risk factors, and this association persists after adjusting for other factors. Healthcare professionals should be aware of the increased likelihood of severe COVID-19 in nondiabetic patients with MAFLD.

Summary: Patients with cirrhosis and COVID-19 had higher mortality compared with patients with COVID-19 alone, but similar mortality compared with patients with cirrhosis alone. Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was the only independent predictor of mortality in the entire matched cohort.
