Summary: The synthesis of sp(2)-carbon linked CN porous nanotubes using polyethyleneimine as a template and modifying agent resulted in enhanced specific surface area and visible light absorption, leading to improved photocatalytic H-2 evolution activity. The insertion of sp(2)-C in C-CN decreased photoactivity at certain wavelengths due to the reduction of active amino groups, indicating a structure-performance relationship in C-CN that may guide future research on mesoporous CN-based photocatalysts.

The nitrogen-deficient UCN/DCN homojunction exhibits extended optical absorption, enhanced charge separation, and improved photocatalytic H-2 evolution compared to UCN and DCN. The research provides a new facile way to synthesize nitrogen-deficient CN homojunctions.
