Correlation of SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid Antigen and RNA Concentrations in Nasopharyngeal Samples from Children and Adults Using an Ultrasensitive and Quantitative Antigen Assay

Nira R. Pollock et al.

Summary: Diagnosis of COVID-19 by PCR is sensitive, but the utility of detecting samples with high C-T values remains controversial. A new ultrasensitive immunoassay for SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid showed high sensitivity in samples with C-T values of <35, providing insight into the performance of Ag RDTs for COVID-19 diagnosis.

Field evaluation of a rapid antigen test (Panbio™ COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device) for COVID-19 diagnosis in primary healthcare centres

Eliseo Albert et al.

Summary: The Panbio (TM) COVID-19 Ag Rapid Test Device performed well as a POC test for early diagnosis of COVID-19 in primary healthcare centres, with a specificity and sensitivity of 100% and 79.6% respectively. The negative predictive value of RAD was 99% and 97.9% under estimated prevalence of 5% and 10% respectively.

Performance of Saliva, Oropharyngeal Swabs, and Nasal Swabs for SARS-CoV-2 Molecular Detection: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Rose A. Lee et al.

Summary: Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs are considered the best sample for diagnosing SARS-CoV-2, but saliva, oropharyngeal (OP), nasal (NS) swabs, and combinations of OP/NS are promising alternatives. While some alternative samples had lower detection rates, a combination of OP/NS showed comparable performance to NP swabs. The absence of RNA extraction (saliva) and use of a more sensitive nucleic acid amplification test (NS) significantly reduced the positive yield of alternative samples.
