Distributed Generation has emerged as a potential solution for upgrading the resilience of distribution systems, providing clean energy and contributing to active distribution systems, islanded micro-grids, and system restoration under normal and extreme weather conditions. The paper reviews the impact of extreme events on power systems and the role of DG in solving challenges, aiming to explore the anticipated benefits of DG integration into the system.
Distributed Generation has emerged as a prospective solution that is integrated into the system to upgrade the resilience of the distribution system. Apart from providing clean energy, DGs are gaining considerable attention towards contribution to the system in the form of active distribution system realization, islanded micro-grid formulation and resiliency accomplishment, and restoration of distribution system under normal and extreme weather conditions. A brief review of different types of resilience assessment techniques, along with a comparison based on several criteria, including resilience assessment algorithm, graph, methodology, and equations, has been discussed. This paper presents a comprehensive review highlighting the impact and influence of the extreme event on the power system and the role of DG in solving the challenges caused due to these events. This paper aims at highlighting and exploring the anticipated benefits of DG to comprehend the impacts of extreme events on the system. The transformation from conventional sources of generation to Distributed generation holds merit when potentials of DGs are utilized effectively. DGs, with their heterogeneous forms, promisingly increases its utilization as an outstanding solution when optimally sized and sited. This paper presents the state of the art of DG deployment for bringing a wide assortment of advantages of DG integration in the power system network that has not been discussed so far by other researchers. An endeavor has been made to condense the current methodologies and present a detailed discussion with relevant methodologies. This would help researchers gain insight about leveraging renewable DG sources for exploiting the proliferating abilities of DG integration into the system for normal and extreme weather events.
