Proton Radiotherapy to Preserve Fertility and Endocrine Function: A Translational Investigation

Jeffrey P. Gross et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of gamma-ray radiation therapy (GRT) and proton radiation therapy (PRT) on ovarian function and primordial follicle survival in mouse pelvic, showing that ovaries positioned beyond the spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) were spared while those in the SOBP plateau had reduced ovarian reserve. The research suggests that proton therapy is safer than photon radiation therapy in preserving ovarian function and supports further investigations into the use of proton therapy for abdominopelvic tumors in young women.
