Wild Atlantic salmon exposed to sea lice from aquaculture show reduced marine survival and modified response to ocean climate

Samuel Shephard et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of sea lice from coastal aquaculture on the marine survival of Atlantic salmon smolts, finding interactions with ocean climate variations. Rivers with aquaculture had lower one sea-winter returns in years with high lice levels, and control rivers showed a strong negative Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation effect in low lice years. This suggests that smolts experiencing mild-to-moderate lice infestation may be more sensitive to ocean warming.
