Combined impacts of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation on global droughts assessed using the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index

Phuong-Loan Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study examines the combined effects of ENSO and PDO on global droughts using the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index. It identifies different drought hotspots for El Nino and La Nina events, as well as the modulation of El Nino-induced drought by PDO.

Effects of aerosols and water vapour on spatial-temporal variations of the clear-sky surface solar radiation in China

Lan Yu et al.

Summary: Clear-sky solar radiation is an important indicator of solar energy potential, with aerosols and water vapor being the main factors causing losses of surface solar radiation. This study created a clear-sky SSR dataset for China from 2001 to 2015 using satellite aerosol data and reanalysis water vapor data, calculating the aerosol direct radiative effect (ADRE) and water vapor radiative effect (WVRE) to study the losses. The results show seasonal variations in the impacts of aerosols and water vapor on clear-sky solar radiation, with ADRE variations being the main factor controlling annual trends.

Evaluation of precipitation in CMIP6 over the Yangtze River Basin

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The study found that CMIP6 models generally captured the increasing pattern of precipitation from the source region to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin, but with a significant wet bias. Most models exhibited an increasing trend in precipitation in the northwest part of the basin during 1961-2014, but displayed large spatial discrepancies in other regions. Future projections show that precipitation over the Yangtze River basin will continue to increase under both scenarios, but the rate of increase will vary between near term and long term periods.
