Sodium hydroxide catalytic ethanol pretreatment and surfactant on the enzymatic saccharification of sugarcane bagasse

Jiajie Zhang et al.

Summary: The NaOH catalytic ethanol pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse improved glucose yield by assisting delignification and preserving cellulose and hemicellulose. Higher temperature and longer time resulted in higher glucose yield, while the addition of Tween 80 significantly reduced enzyme usage and enzymolysis time while maintaining comparable glucose yield. This study provided an economically feasible method for generating glucose followed by fermentation and conversion to platform chemicals.

Comparison of dilute acid pretreatment of agave assisted by microwave versus ultrasound to enhance enzymatic hydrolysis

Leopoldo J. Rios-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: A comparison between microwave and ultrasound irradiations in the agave pretreatment showed that microwave-assisted pretreatment had higher hemicellulose removal and glucose yield, reducing process time and temperature compared to conventional heating.

Comparison of acid and alkali catalyzed ethylene glycol organosolv pretreatment for sugar production from bagasse

Weiqi Wei et al.

Summary: In this study, five acid or alkali catalyzed ethylene glycol (EG) organosolv pretreatments were proposed and compared for sugar production from bagasse. The results showed that EG/H2O-HCl pretreatment was more efficient for both hemicellulose and lignin remove, while EG/H2O-NaOH pretreatment was beneficial for lignin remove but weak for hemicellulose degradation. Both pretreatments have good capacity to reserve the cellulose in pretreated solids.

Effects of operational conditions on auto-catalyzed and sulfuric-acid-catalyzed hydrothermal pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse at different severity factor

Dimitrios Ilanidis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrothermal pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse, focusing on the effects of different conditions on the formation of sugars and inhibitors, the chemical composition and recovery of constituents, pseudo lignin formation, furan aldehydes, enzymatic digestibility, enzyme inhibition, and fermentability. Glucose and xylose were predominant sugars in the pretreatment liquids, with A-HTP showing better enzymatic digestibility and fermentability by Saccharomyces cerevisiae compared to SA-HTP. Good results can be achieved without the addition of sulfuric acid, as long as hemicelluloses are quantitatively solubilized.
