This study reviews the application of green solvents in membrane fabrication processes and compares the advantages and drawbacks of using water, biosourced solvents, nontoxic synthetic organic solvents, and ionic liquids as alternatives to traditional toxic solvents.
Membrane fabrication highly relies on solution processes. Environmental and health concerns are driving the investigation of alternative green solvents to substitute classical toxic ones. Recent contributions to this topic are reviewed, comparing advantages and drawbacks of manufacturing membranes using water, biosourced solvents, nontoxic synthetic organic solvents, and ionic liquids as the most explored.
