Identification of native endophytic Trichoderma spp. for investigation of in vitro antagonism towards Armillaria mellea using synthetic- and plant-based substrates

H. J. Rees et al.

Summary: Endophytic Trichoderma isolates, particularly Trichoderma virens and T. hamatum, showed promising antagonistic activity against the root rot pathogen Armillaria mellea. The use of pre-colonized hazel disks was crucial in demonstrating fungal interactions in plant material. This study highlights the potential of biological control as an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical treatments for controlling root rot diseases.

Hallmarks of Basidiomycete Soft- and White-Rot in Wood-Decay -Omics Data of Two Armillaria Species

Neha Sahu et al.

Summary: Wood-decaying Basidiomycetes play crucial roles in forest ecosystems, global carbon cycle, and bio-based industries. Recent studies have shown that certain Armillaria species exhibit atypical wood-decay gene combinations, resembling soft-rot fungi, with an enrichment of pectinases and expansins instead of traditional lignin-degrading enzymes. This observation suggests a conservation of ancestral soft-rot decay machinery across asco- and Basidiomycota.

Phylogeography and host range of Armillaria gallica in riparian forests of the northern Great Plains, USA

Brandon C. Alveshere et al.

Summary: Root disease pathogens, such as Armillaria, are a major cause of growth loss and tree mortality in North American forest ecosystems. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic studies have provided insights into the taxonomic diversity of Armillaria spp., with results indicating that A. gallica is a common root pathogen of hardwood trees in riparian forests of the northern Great Plains.
