Currently, lithium-ion batteries are receiving the attention of industries like automobiles, electronics, aerospace and so on due to its high energy density, power density and great working performance as compared to other batteries like lead-acid, nickel-cadmium etc. However, some indispensable factors limit its applicability, such as weakening in performance under the utmost driving conditions because of heat generation in the lithium-ion cell. Therefore, it becomes necessary to scrutinize the effects of heat generation on various components of the lithium-ion cell and to conduct the best course of action for the same. This paper reviewed the actual mechanism of heat generation and its effect on each component of the lithium-ion cell. Furthermore, a study on various temperature controlling systems using different design structure in distinct cooling techniques like air convection, liquid convection, phase change material and combination of it is performed. Finally, a summary is made using different design structure based on maximum temperature and temperature uniformity in each cooling techniques at different testing conditions.
