Wide-scope screening of polar contaminants of concern in water: A critical review of liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry-based strategies

Suspect screening based on market data of polar halogenated micropollutants in river water affected by wastewater

Summary: This study identified unknown CECs in the aquatic environment through a novel suspect screening approach for organohalogens, confirming or tentatively identifying thirteen suspects, including seven previously unknown structures. Spatiotemporal occurrence patterns were detected, revealing usage patterns of chemicals and pinpointing potential pollution sources, such as specific WWTPs in the catchment. Several of the newly identified structures had limited information publicly available and were detected years after their last registered use, highlighting knowledge gaps and concerns about POPs.
