A Registration Method for Three-Dimensional Analysis of Bone Mineral Density in the Proximal Tibia

Hugo Babel et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a registration method for standardized quantification of 3D proximal tibial BMD in routine knee CT scans, and to characterize BMD distribution below the tibial cartilages in healthy knees as an example. The method proved to be highly reproducible and provided a comprehensive description of the relationship between bone depth and BMD, showing significantly higher BMD in the first 6mm of bone than deeper in the proximal tibia.
