First Reported Nosocomial Outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 in a Pediatric Dialysis Unit

Vera Schwierzeck et al.

Summary: This study reports a nosocomial outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the pediatric dialysis unit of the University Hospital Munster in Germany, involving a total of 48 cases. Among them, 9 contact cases developed laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infections, while 2 SARS-CoV-2-positive cases remained clinically asymptomatic.

A cluster of health care workers with COVID-19 pneumonia caused by SARS-CoV-2

Xiao-Shan Wei et al.

Summary: Most of the 14 infected HCWs in the neurosurgery department of Wuhan Union Hospital were exposed to index patients or infected coworkers unknowingly. They mainly presented with symptoms such as myalgia or fatigue, fever, and dry cough. Blood tests showed abnormalities in white blood cell count and certain immune markers, while pulmonary CT scans commonly showed bilateral multifocal ground-glass opacifications.

Nosocomial Transmission of Coronavirus Disease 2019: A Retrospective Study of 66 Hospital-acquired Cases in a London Teaching Hospital

Hannah M. Rickman et al.

Summary: COVID-19 can lead to deadly healthcare-associated outbreaks, with 15% of inpatients in a major London teaching hospital being confirmed or probable hospital-acquired cases. Despite a 36% case fatality rate, nosocomial infection rates decreased after comprehensive infection prevention and control measures were implemented.

Development and Delivery of a Real-time Hospital-onset COVID-19 Surveillance System Using Network Analysis

James Richard Price et al.

Summary: This study describes the design and implementation of a hospital-onset COVID-19 infection surveillance system in a large teaching hospital group in London, UK. Real-time surveillance reports showed changing rates of HOCI, key wards fueling transmission events, and the importance of integrating analysis of individual pathways. Co-design with stakeholders was crucial in producing useful data visualization for end users.

Assessing the spreading potential of an undetected case of COVID-19 in orthopaedic surgery

K. N. Schneider et al.

Summary: The case report describes a 64-year-old male patient who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 seven days after admission to the orthopaedic department, despite strict infection control measures. However, none of the healthcare workers tested positive for the virus, suggesting that hygienic measures and contact precautions may have been effective in preventing transmission despite high-risk exposure.

Summary: A study conducted at a public health care facility in Egypt found a high rate of asymptomatic infections among health care workers, highlighting the need to expand universal regular testing. The infection rate among symptomatic HCWs was comparable to the national rate, suggesting that infections among HCWs may reflect community transmission.
