A methodological framework to analyse determinants of host-microbiota networks, with an application to the relationships betweenDaphnia magna's gut microbiota and bacterioplankton

Francois Massol et al.

Summary: Over the past 30 years, there has been a surge of interest in assessing ecological interactions using tools from network theory, and advancements in next-generation sequencing have led to an explosion of data on microbial symbionts. This study presents two methods to elucidate the determinants of bipartite interaction networks, showing that both environmental and biological factors can influence microbial network structure, with microbial richness mediating the effects of diet on gut microbiota. Fine-grained analyses reveal a nuanced picture of reciprocal effects between bacterioplankton and gut microbiota.

Summary: Research indicates that locally adapted gut microbiomes affect the stress tolerance of Daphnia magna. D. magna individuals perform better when inoculated with microbiomes from sympatric donors exposed to toxic cyanobacteria.
