Drivers and barriers for Industry 4.0 readiness and practice: empirical evidence from small and medium-sized manufacturers

Jan Stentoft et al.

Summary: The research found that the main barrier for Danish SMEs in Industry 4.0 readiness is the lack of managerial perception of Industry 4.0 drivers rather than their awareness of high Industry 4.0 barriers. This insight provides nuanced interpretations of the challenges faced by the companies. It also highlights the importance of SMEs engaging with Industry 4.0 barriers when there is a perceived business case, which has implications for policy initiatives promoting Industry 4.0 adaptation among SMEs.
