Maternal mortality and COVID-19

Maira L. S. Takemoto et al.

Summary: This study identified 20 COVID-19-related maternal deaths in Brazil, with most occurring in the postpartum period and a range of 20-43 years old. Asthma was the most common risk factor, and cases were concentrated in the Northeast and Southeast regions, particularly in Sao Paulo. The study suggests that barriers to healthcare, differences in pandemic containment measures, and high prevalence of risk factors for severe COVID-19 may contribute to the observed disparity in maternal outcomes compared to worldwide reports.

Spectrum of neonatal COVID-19 in Iran: 19 infants with SARS-CoV-2 perinatal infections with varying test results, clinical findings and outcomes

David A. Schwartz et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the epidemiology, diagnostic test results, and clinical findings of neonatal COVID-19 in Iran. The results showed significant variation in the cases, with some neonates initially testing negative but later becoming positive. Two neonates were highly suspicious for intrauterine vertical transmission. The study recommends repeat testing for neonates testing negative initially to avoid misdiagnosis.

Vertical transmission of coronavirus disease 2019: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Alexander M. Kotlyar et al.

Summary: The study found that 3.2% of 936 neonates from mothers with coronavirus disease 2019 tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 viral RNA using nasopharyngeal swab. The rates of infection are similar to those of other pathogens causing congenital infections but further research is needed to determine the rates of vertical transmission in early pregnancy and potential risk for fetal morbidity and mortality.

Placental SARS-CoV-2 in a pregnant woman with mild COVID-19 disease

Albert L. Hsu et al.

Summary: A case study reported placental infection of SARS-CoV-2 in a patient with mild COVID-19 symptoms, raising concerns about placental vascular pathology and potential vertical transmission. Despite mild infection during pregnancy, there may be risks of placental vasculopathy and viral transmission across the placenta.

Summary: This study indicates that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection in neonates is extremely low. Most COVID-positive newborns were symptomatic and required intensive care. Postpartum acquisition was the most common mode of infection in neonates, although a few cases of congenital infection have also been reported.

Placental Pathology Findings during and after SARS-CoV-2 Infection: Features of Villitis and Malperfusion

Thomas Menter et al.

Summary: This study presented five cases of SARS-CoV-2-positive placentas from pregnant women with mild COVID-19 symptoms or who were asymptomatic. Only one patient showed symptoms of cough and dyspnoea. Histopathological analysis revealed signs of maternal and foetal malperfusion in all placentas, but there was no evidence of transplacental transmission to the infants. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in placental tissue and umbilical cord suggests a potential for infection of the placenta, but further research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Summary: Limited data are available on vertical and perinatal transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and health outcomes of neonates born to mothers with COVID-19. This retrospective cohort analysis of 101 neonates born to mothers with SARS-CoV-2 infection showed no evidence of vertical transmission, with maternal severe/critical COVID-19 associated with earlier birth and increased risk of requiring phototherapy in newborns.
