Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness: New Insights and Challenges

Huong Q. McLean et al.

Summary: Methods for assessing influenza vaccine efficacy and effectiveness have evolved over six decades, with randomized trials remaining the gold standard for licensure and observational studies needed for annual assessment. The test-negative design (TND) is now the standard for field studies. Vaccine effectiveness varies across seasons, populations, age groups, and products, with consistently higher estimates for A(H1N1) pdm09 and type B compared with A(H3N2).
