Citrus pectin modified by microfluidization and ultrasonication: Improved emulsifying and encapsulation properties

Wenjun Wang et al.

Summary: The modified pectin treated with a combination of microfluidization and moderate ultrasonication (MUB) showed the lowest hydrodynamic diameter, molecular weight, and polydispersity, with relatively low apparent viscosity and significantly higher DPPH radical scavenging capacity. MUB also exhibited improved emulsifying and encapsulation properties compared to the original and ultrasonication treated pectin.

Effects of ultrasonic conditions on the interfacial property and emulsifying property of cellulose nanoparticles from ginkgo seed shells

Yang Ni et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of ultrasonic treatments on the interfacial and emulsifying properties of cellulose nanoparticles. It was found that ultrasonic duration had a greater influence on the morphology and physical properties of the nanoparticles, and could significantly improve their hydrophobicity. Ultrasonic treatments also enhanced the emulsifying ability of cellulose nanoparticles by promoting their adsorption at the oil-water interface.

Ultrasound irradiation alters the spatial structure and improves the antioxidant activity of the yellow tea polysaccharide

Haisong Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that ultrasound irradiation significantly reduced the molecular weight and particle size of yellow tea polysaccharides. Partial degradation of yellow tea polysaccharides occurred during ultrasound treatment, but the monosaccharide composition remained unchanged. Irradiation enhanced the free radical scavenging activity of yellow tea polysaccharides.

Production, physicochemical characteristics, and in vitro biological activities of polysaccharides obtained from fresh bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) via room temperature extraction techniques

Jing-Kun Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, polysaccharides were extracted from fresh bitter gourd using different extraction methods, showing differences in chemical composition, structural features, and bioactivities. Among the samples, BPS-W extracted via UAE in distilled water exhibited superior bioactivities compared to other samples.

Effects of structural and conformational characteristics of citrus pectin on its functional properties

Chun Wang et al.

Summary: It was found that untreated pectin exhibited higher rheological and gelling properties compared to ultrasound-treated pectins, while the ultrasound-treated pectins showed better emulsifying properties in an oil-in-water emulsion system. The molecular weight and chain conformation of untreated and ultrasound-treated pectins played crucial roles in determining their functional properties.

Recovery of non-starch polysaccharides from ripe banana (Musa cavendishii)

Lina M. Rayo-Mendez et al.

Summary: Non-starch polysaccharides recovery from overripe bananas is challenging due to the high quantities of soluble sugars accumulated during the ripening process. Different extraction methods, solid/solvent ratios, and temperatures were investigated to maximize soluble solids extraction and minimize energy consumption. The condition that showed the highest efficiency was a solid/solvent ratio of 1:5 g/mL, at 25 degrees C under mechanical stirring.
