Maligned mobilities, absences and emergencies: refugee education in Australia

Julie Matthews

Summary: This paper argues that the maligned mobility and disparaged figure of the 'refugee' can be used to establish and reconstruct exclusionary national identities, but also presents new possibilities for inclusive education. Drawing on southern epistemology and the sociology of absences and emergence, the paper discusses the anticipatory and emergent dimensions of refugee education, highlighting the determination and strength of refugees, as well as the complex effects of racism and racialisation. It demonstrates how inclusive education can serve as a tool for resistance, transformation, and reconstruction, opening up possibilities for new forms of intelligibility, community, and humanity.
