Temporal Distribution of Solar Cycle 24 Sunspot Groups: Comparison to Cycles 12-23

Jouni Takalo

Summary: Analyzing the temporal distribution of sunspot groups reveals that even cycles have a double-peak structure, while sunspot groups in odd cycles are more synchronous. There is a significant decline in total area and average area of even cycles approximately four years after the beginning of the cycle, which is not observed in odd cycles.
