Polyamide 6 microplastics facilitate methane production during anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Hongbo Chen et al.

Summary: The study identifies the key role of Polyamide 6 (PA6) microplastics in enhancing methane production during anaerobic digestion, with a significant increase in methane production due to the presence of caprolactam (CPL). PA6 has a less toxic effect compared to other microplastics on waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic digestion, and it promotes key enzyme activities leading to increased methane production potential and volatile solids destruction.

Removal of pathogen and antibiotic resistance genes from waste activated sludge by different pre-treatment approaches

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of various waste activated sludge pre-treatment approaches in inactivating coliforms/E. coli and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), with electro-Fenton proving to be the most efficient in disinfecting potential pathogens. However, all pre-treatment methods showed lower efficiency in inactivating ARGs/intI1 compared to coliforms/E. coli. Mechanical ultrasound treatment was effective in reducing ARGs/intI1, but not in inactivating coliforms/E. coli in the treated sludge. High regrowth rates of coliforms/E. coli were observed in the treated sludge, while the abundance of ARGs/intI1 continuously decreased during the after-treatment incubation. Further investigation is needed to understand the reduction of ARGs/intI1 in waste activated sludge.

Volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge during anaerobic fermentation: The effect of superfine sand

Xiupeng Jiang et al.

Summary: The presence of superfine sand in waste activated sludge was found to positively impact VFAs production, mainly by promoting acetic acid generation and increasing the abundance and activity of anaerobic functional microorganisms.

Calibration of maize phosphorus status by plant-available soil P assessed by common and process-based approaches. Is it soil-specific or not?

Christian Morel et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the relationship between the P nutrition index based on critical P dilution of maize and indicators of soil P supply. Results showed that process-based and chemical extraction methods were equally effective, with process-based assessment providing more accurate and reliable estimates of soil P contribution to plant nutrition.
