Gut microbiome in serious mental illnesses: A systematic review and critical evaluation

Tanya T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are associated with altered gut microbiome composition, with certain bacteria linked to clinical characteristics and outcomes. Limited evidence supports the efficacy of probiotic or prebiotic interventions in serious mental illness. There is a need for unified methodological standards in microbiome research to better understand microbial contributions to psychiatric disorders.
