This paper addresses the effects of uncertainties on the optimal design of trusses and laminated composite plates, and compares three different optimization approaches based on the probability of failure. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to obtain the probability of failure.
This paper addresses the effects of uncertainties on the optimal design of trusses and laminated composite plates. Uncertainties are considered in the design variables and material properties. Structural optimization is performed using the failure theory as a constraint, coupled with particle swarm optimization (PSO). Three different optimization approaches are utilized: (i) Deterministic optimization (ii) Reliability-based design optimization and (iii) Robust design optimization. A comparison is conducted between the aforementioned approaches based on the probability of failure. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to obtain the probability of failure.
