Incorporating TiC nanoparticles into high-strength aluminum alloys facilitates arc welding and effectively prevents defects such as hot cracks and crater cracks. This nano-treatment method results in homogeneous weld metal microstructures with excellent mechanical behavior, making it a promising solution for traditionally hard-to-weld alloy systems.
Arc welding of high-strength aluminum alloys is economical and reliable in industry, but it is often difficult in practice because they suffer from defects such as hot cracks and crater cracks. Here, we incorporate TiC nanoparticles into an Al-Mg-Mn alloy to produce nano-treated filler wire and successfully TIG weld similar systems of AA2024, AA5083, AA6061, and AA7075. As-welded samples exhibited no such defects, and their homogeneous weld metal microstructures showed globular grains smaller than 50 mm. Microhardness profiles of each weld showed sound mechanical behavior. Nano-treatment is therefore a promising solution to enable the arc welding of traditionally hard-to-weld alloy systems.
