Electrochemical reduction and dissolution of liquid aluminium in thin layers of molten halides

Andrey Yasinskiy et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in liquid metal refining and separation methods have shown a preference towards chloride-based melts over fluoride mixtures due to their larger electrode potential window and higher apparent limiting currents. Temperature significantly influences the overall kinetics, with the activation energy for alkali metal reduction being found to be 94.762 kJ mol(-1). The composition of the melt, particularly the AlF3 concentration, plays a crucial role in refining performance.

Electrochemical Reduction and Dissolution of Aluminium in a Thin-Layer Refinery Process

Andrey Yasinskiy et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method for extracting waste aluminum in a multiple-capillary molten salt electro-chemical system to reduce energy consumption. Single-capillary electrolysis can be used to better understand the kinetics of aluminum reduction and dissolution. Thin-layer cells should be operated at a thickness of less than 5mm.
