Backfire-to-endfire scanning capability of a balanced metamaterial structure based on slotted ferrite-filled waveguide

Summary: This paper introduces a new metamaterial structure composed of a normally magnetized ferrite-filled rectangular waveguide with a long slot on the center of the broad wall. The unique dispersion properties and magnetically tunable behavior are studied. As an application, a magnetically backfire-to-endfire scanning leaky-wave antenna is presented, showing the ability to scan radiation pattern by changing the magnetic DC bias of the ferrite. The advantages of the proposed structure include ease of design and fabrication, and no need for mechanical or electrical switches.
