In this review, the importance of 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AAP) and its derivatives after forming a Schiff base by condensing with different kinds of carbonyl compounds and their metal complexes are described. As it is a well-known fact that the Schiff base is able to form metal complexes with almost all transition metals and lanthanides, many researchers have elaborately studied the use of 4-AAP derivatives and their complexes in various applications. Owing to the facile chelating ability, it is extensively used to identify and to estimate the presence of metal ions in solutions. Besides the use of 4-AAP derivatives in analytical chemistry, the metal chelates are extensively used in the fields like corrosion inhibition, energy harvesting, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cytotoxicity, anti-convulsant, anthelmintic activity, analgesic, antipyretic, DNA binding and DNA cleavage, etc. The prominent results available in these fields are compiled in this review.
