Natural Attenuation of Acid Mine Drainage by Various Rocks in the Witbank, Ermelo and Highveld Coalfields, South Africa

E. Sakala et al.

Summary: This study investigates the response of different rock types in the Karoo coalfields to acid mine drainage (AMD). The presence of high carbonate mineral content in rocks can help neutralize and reduce the concentration of heavy metals in AMD. Sulfate and chloride concentrations in AMD remain unchanged after the leaching process, indicating their potential as conservative tracers of AMD movement in the subsurface.
