The potential of diagnostic point-of-care tests (POCTs) for infectious and zoonotic animal diseases in developing countries: Technical, regulatory and sociocultural considerations

Emma C. Hobbs et al.

Summary: Remote and rural communities in low- and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected by infectious animal diseases due to their close contact with livestock and limited access to animal health personnel. Point-of-care tests (POCTs) have the potential to disrupt traditional animal health surveillance paradigms in these countries, but many current POCTs target only a small number of key agricultural and zoonotic animal diseases. Evaluation and validation of POCTs in LMICs are lacking, posing challenges for potential customers and potentially undermining their effectiveness in disease control. Further research and regulatory measures are urgently needed to fully realize the potential of animal disease POCTs in LMICs.
