Functional Hearing Loss and Social Engagement Among Medicare Beneficiaries

Aishwarya Shukla et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between functional hearing loss and social engagement in older adults, finding that trouble hearing was independently associated with a higher likelihood of limited social activity. This suggests that hearing loss may be an important risk factor for restricted social engagement and negative health consequences.

Understanding Listening-Related Fatigue: Perspectives of Adults with Hearing Loss

Hilary Davis et al.

Summary: The study found that adults with hearing loss experience multidimensional listening-related fatigue in different domains, including physical, mental, emotional, and social areas. The external acoustic/environmental characteristics, internal cognitive/motivational state of the listener, and coping strategies all influence the experience of listening-related fatigue, and the use of amplification has both positive and negative effects.
