Plasma levels of trimethylamine-N-oxide can be increased with 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' diets and do not correlate with the extent of atherosclerosis but with plaque instability

Yen Chin Koay et al.

Summary: The study found that changes in the microbiome induced by both 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' diets can increase plasma TMAO levels in mice. Interestingly, TMAO can be directly oxidized in the gut. However, there was no direct association of plasma TMAO with the extent of atherosclerosis in two well-accepted mouse models of the disease.
