The voltage-gated proton channel Hv1 plays a detrimental role in contusion spinal cord injury via extracellular acidosis-mediated neuroinflammation

Yun Li et al.

Summary: Tissue acidosis is a crucial secondary injury process in traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). This study demonstrates that Hv1 proton channel mediates hydrogen proton extrusion after SCI, contributing to increased tissue acidosis and poor long-term outcomes. Hv1 deficiency leads to reduced acidosis, ROS production, and improved functional outcomes, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target for SCI.
