Effect of magneto-active filling on the effectiveness of methane fermentation of dairy wastewaters

Marcin Debowski et al.

Summary: The goal of this study was to determine the effectiveness of methane fermentation in dairy wastewaters using a magnetic active filling (MAF) in an anaerobic reactor. The experiments showed that the incorporation of MAF significantly improved biogas production, methane concentration, and COD removal efficiency, while reducing hydrogen sulfide content. The study also found a correlation between the number of MAF elements and the effectiveness of methane fermentation.

Mitigation of eutrophication caused by wastewater discharge: A simulation-based approach

Michal Preisner et al.

Summary: The study proposes an alternative approach for surface water protection against eutrophication based on the selection of appropriate nutrient removal technologies, using an activated sludge model simulation to identify environmentally justified nutrient removal systems. The 3-stage Bardenpho system was found to be most efficient for bioavailable phosphorus removal, while the Johannesburg system was most efficient for bioavailable nitrogen removal. This highlights the need for a reconsideration of current legal regulations that do not take into account nutrient bioavailability and key eutrophication limiting factors.

Effect of Low-Temperature Conditioning of Excess Dairy Sewage Sludge with the Use of Solidified Carbon Dioxide on the Efficiency of Methane Fermentation

Joanna Kazimierowicz et al.

Summary: The study found that the highest chemical oxygen demand values were produced with a solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge ratio ranging from 0.3 to 0.5, while ammonia nitrogen and orthophosphates concentrations also increased. The variant with a solidified carbon dioxide to excess dairy sewage sludge volumetric ratio of 0.3 yielded the highest unitary amount of biogas.
