Ionic composition, geological signature and environmental impacts of coalbed methane produced water in China

Chen Guo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the ionic composition data of coalbed methane produced water in China and found that the major ions Na, Cl, and HCO3 are influenced by sulfate reduction, mixing of coal seam water with fracturing fluid, and other factors. The quality variability of produced water is controlled by factors including burial depth, fresh water influence, and fracturing fluid contamination. Further research and regulations for appropriate treatment of CBM produced water are urgently needed in China.
