Bio-carriers are vital in microbial treatment technology. By modifying polypropylene fibers with chitosan coating, the bio-affinity of the fibers was improved, resulting in over 10 times more bacteria fixed on the modified fibers compared to unmodified ones.
Bio-carriers play significant roles in microbial treatment technology. Fiber-based bacterial carriers have many advantages than others for larger specific surface area and better structural designability and polypropylene (PP) fibers show better service performance in harsh environments. To increase the number of bacteria loaded, a modification was applied in this study to provide PP fibers with positive charged film by coating chitosan. The modified PP (MPP) fibers showed better bio-affinity than other fibers. The number of bacteria fixed on MPP exceeded 10 times than that on PP, and modification gives PP fibers chelating cation function. It is certain that MPP could be good candidate for bio-carrier.
