Dendrite-free Lithium Based on Lessons Learned from Lithium and Magnesium Electrodeposition Morphology Simulations

Summary: Electroplating is a common process to create smooth surfaces and thin coatings, but achieving smooth lithium plating without dendrite growth remains a challenge for next-generation Li-ion batteries. A multiscale model integrating atomistic calculations and mesoscale phase-field model has been proposed to design dendrite-free Li-ion battery anodes. The study reveals the difference in cation desolvation-induced exchange current as the main factor responsible for different dendritic Li plating and smooth Mg plating.
