The Obese Patient: Facts, Fables, and Best Practices

Tiffany S. Moon et al.

Summary: Obesity affects anatomy and physiology, complicating perioperative management. Gastric point-of-care ultrasound can assess aspiration risk in obese patients. Standard noninvasive blood pressure measurement may be less accurate in obese patients, and dosing of prophylactic antibiotics and vasoactive medications for them needs further research. Intubation and extubation of obese patients can be challenging, and evidence-based strategies are discussed to ensure safety.
