This work reviews the applications of thin film nanocomposites for renewable energy. Current and futures research directions in this area are explored. Relevant characteristics required for optimal performance and various fabrication methods in renewable energy area discussed. Evolution of size dependent properties and quantum effects of nanoparticles in thin film nanocomposites and their impact renewable energy technologies are considered. These properties include, optical, mechanical, electrical, magnetic behavior and photochemical/catalytic properties as well as high stability against corrosion, and non-toxicity. How dispersion of nanoparticles affects the viscosity, fracture toughness and the fracture energy and in turn impact the longevity and mechanical property of thin film composites is reviewed.
