Overexpression of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 Receptor, Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2, in Diabetic Kidney Disease: Implications for Kidney Injury in Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019

Richard E. Gilbert et al.

Summary: The study found that diabetic kidney disease patients had approximately 2-fold higher levels of ACE2 messenger RNA compared to healthy controls, which may increase the risk and severity of kidney infection with SARS-CoV-2 during COVID-19. However, there was no significant difference in transcript abundance between recipients and nonrecipients of agents that block the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).
