Altitude-related shift of relative abundance from insect to sunbird pollination in Elaeagnus umbellata (Elaeagnaceae)

Hua-Qiang Pi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the floral traits and altitudinal variation of Elaeagnus umbellata shrubs in Sichuan Province, China. Results showed that plant size decreased with altitude, while floral tubes became longer and nectar volume increased with higher sucrose proportion at higher altitudes. Bee visitation frequency decreased with altitude, while sunbirds increased. Birds foraged for nectar but not pollen, influencing seed set at higher altitudes.
