A detailed theoretical model and numerical simulation of the birefringence in spun fiber are demonstrated. In this work, we show that the spun fiber can be thought of as a cascade of a series of thin linear retarders with stable linear birefringence and angle difference between two adjacent retarders. A Jones matrix model is proposed and then is used to derive the birefringence in spun fiber which is determined by both original linear birefringence in fiber and the spinning rate. Numerical simulation is proposed to verify this model and the results are in close agreement.
