Enzymes that methylate usingS-adenosyl-l-methionine - nature's methyliodide - are abundant and often promiscuous; however, a preference for alkylation over methylation has been neither observed in nature nor engineered. Now, carboxymethylation has been demonstrated using engineered methyltransferases.
