Effect of pyrolysis on basic functional groups of hydrochars

Nepu Saha et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a thermochemical process that produces functionalized carbon-rich solid materials known as hydrochar by treating biomass with water at subcritical conditions. Pyrolysis is often used to increase the surface area and expose corresponding functional groups of amorphous carbon materials like hydrochar. The study aimed to quantify basic functional groups on hydrochars and investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature on these functional groups.
