Ocean Turbulence and Mixing Near the Shelf Break South-East of Nova Scotia

Iossif Lozovatsky et al.

Summary: Coastal fog formation near the southern tip of Nova Scotia was observed due to the advection of warm, humid air towards the shore over colder water. Shear instability in the pycnocline was frequently observed on the Nova Scotia shelf, shelf break, and continental slope, with high probability values of the gradient Richardson number in certain depth ranges. Additionally, the eddy diffusivity estimates showed a strong dependence on Richardson number, indicating a higher level of mixing at certain conditions.

Investigating the Sensitivity of Marine Fog to Physical and Microphysical Processes Using Large-Eddy Simulation

Charlotte Wainwright et al.

Summary: The study investigates the sensitivity of marine fog formation to cloud-droplet number concentration, turbulent mixing, and air-sea temperature difference using Large-Eddy Simulation (LES). The research finds that the strength of the fog is highly sensitive to all three factors, with even small changes in cloud-droplet concentration potentially halving or doubling the liquid water content of the fog.
