Health risks associated with fluoride intake from rural drinking water supply and inverse mass balance modeling to decipher hydrogeochemical processes in Vattamalaikarai River basin, South India

S. Arya et al.

Summary: The study focused on the issue of fluorosis in the Vattamalikarai River basin in Tamil Nadu, India, revealing higher fluoride concentrations during the monsoon season. Fluoride primarily comes from fluoride-bearing minerals leaching into groundwater during rock-water interactions. The inverse mass balance model was used to analyze the chemical reactions in groundwater, showing that silicate weathering is a dominant process. Health risk assessment indicated potential risks for children and adults due to fluoride intake, especially during the monsoon season.

Impact of precipitation disparity on groundwater fluctuation in a semi-arid region (Vellore district) of southern India using geospatial techniques

G. Venkatesan et al.

Summary: The impact of precipitation disparity on groundwater level fluctuation was investigated in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, India, using geospatial techniques. The study revealed spatial variations in precipitation intensity and groundwater depth across different seasons, with precipitation levels increasing towards the west and groundwater depth increasing towards the west during monsoon seasons. This study also highlighted a declining trend in regional groundwater levels during the non-monsoon season, which are recharged by monsoon precipitation from June to December.

Color slices analysis of land use changes due to urbanization in a city environment of Miami Area, South Florida, USA

Y. Divya et al.

Summary: By studying land use maps, it was found that in the past 15 years, urban built-up areas in Miami Dade County have rapidly increased, while agricultural land and water areas have decreased at a rapid rate. This study clearly demonstrates how urbanization affects vegetation cover, water areas, and wetlands, with land use classes playing a vital role in the ecosystem.
