A NEW LOOK AT THE REMITTANCES-FDI- ENERGY-ENVIRONMENT NEXUS IN THE CASE OF SELECTED ASIAN NATIONS

Zia Ur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between remittances, FDI, energy use, and CO2 emissions in six major Asian countries (China, India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka) from 1982 to 2014. The results show a stable long-term association among these variables. CO2 emissions increase significantly with higher energy use in all countries in both the long and short term. The impact of remittances on CO2 emissions varies across countries, with positive effects observed in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Bangladesh in the long term, and only in Pakistan, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka in the short term. The inflow of FDI also has varying effects on CO2 emissions, with significant increases observed in China, Sri Lanka, and India, no significant effect in the Philippines and Pakistan, and a significant negative effect in Bangladesh.
